NAHA Friend – Aromatherapy Introduction (English)

๐Ÿฅฅ Fractionated Coconut Oil

English Name: Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO)
Latin Name: Cocos nucifera

๐Ÿ“Œ How It Is Extracted

Fractionated Coconut Oil is derived from regular coconut oil through a process called fractionation, which uses steam distillation or hydrolysis followed by steam distillation to separate and remove the long-chain fatty acids (particularly lauric acid). What remains is a lightweight, clear oil composed almost entirely of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) โ€“ primarily caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10). Unlike regular coconut oil, it remains liquid at room temperature.

โณ Shelf Life

Indefinite shelf life (2+ years, often longer). Due to its high MCT content and low polyunsaturated fatty acid content, FCO is highly resistant to oxidation. It does not need refrigeration and remains stable at room temperature for a very long time.

โœจ Properties & Characteristics

  • Ultra-lightweight, non-greasy, and fast-absorbing
  • Completely clear and odourless โ€“ ideal for scent-sensitive blends
  • Remains liquid at all temperatures (unlike regular coconut oil)
  • Non-comedogenic and suitable for sensitive and oily skin
  • Excellent carrying ability for essential oils
  • Does not stain fabric as easily as heavier oils

๐ŸŽฏ Best Used For

  • All skin types, especially oily, combination, and sensitive skin
  • Carrier oil for essential oil blends โ€“ widely used in aromatherapy massage
  • Body oils, bath oils, and roll-on perfume formulations
  • Hair conditioning, especially for fine hair that heavy oils may weigh down
  • Makeup removal and gentle skin cleansing
  • Diluting essential oils for children and those with sensitive skin (typical dilution: 1โ€“2%)
  • DIY skincare products โ€“ serums, creams, and lotions

๐Ÿงช Key Chemical Constituents

  • Caprylic Acid (C8:0): ~50โ€“65% โ€“ antimicrobial, anti-fungal, quickly absorbed
  • Capric Acid (C10:0): ~30โ€“40% โ€“ anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory
  • Lauric Acid (C12:0): trace amounts only (most removed during fractionation)
  • Caproic Acid (C6:0): minimal trace amounts
  • Note: Unlike virgin coconut oil, FCO contains very little lauric acid โ€“ it is not a substitute for virgin coconut oil in therapeutic protocols.

โš ๏ธ Contraindications & Cautions

  • Generally considered extremely safe for topical use with very low risk of allergic reaction.
  • Those with tree nut allergies should perform a patch test before use, as it is derived from coconut.
  • Not intended for internal consumption as a carrier oil in aromatherapy.
  • Avoid contact with eyes.
  • Although rarely, some individuals may experience skin sensitivity โ€“ always patch test before widespread application.
